HISTORY

From 1st January 2025, Lammermuir Church is the parish church for the villages of Humbie, Gifford, Bolton, East and West Saltoun, Morham and Garvald, and their surrounding area. Lammermuir Parish Church was initially formed at the beginning of 2024, through the union of the formerly linked parishes of Humbie and of Yester Bolton and Saltoun Church, and was joined at the beginning of 2025 by the former parish of Morham & Garvald.
Bolton and Saltoun had been linked in the early days of the Reformation but then separated.  In 1929 the two parishes again joined together under one minister, this time as a union.  In 1979 the Bolton & Saltoun congregation linked with those of Yester and Humbie.

Separately, Morham and Garvald Churches had united in 1951, and were linked with the West Church in Haddington in 1980, sharing a minister since then. Following the Presbytery Mission Plan in the early 2020s, they decided to join what would become Lammermuir Parish Church together with the other villages in the Lammermuir area surrounding Haddington.
Then, in 2015, Yester Bolton & Saltoun formed a union, linked with Humbie.

Over 1400 years ago St Cuthbert was sent out from Lindisfarne as a missionary monk to the hill villages of the Lammermuirs, visiting "villages which were remotely situated among steep and rugged hills, places others feared to visit".  St Cuthbert would surely be gratified to know that his daring journey has led to such a long tradition of Christian worship in those 'dangerous' villages.
You can find out more about the history of the individual church buildings in our parish here, for Humbie Church, Yester Church, Bolton Church and Saltoun Church.
